After booking a family session the next question is: “what should we all wear?” And for good reason — the clothing choices your family makes can bring your photos from bland to fun and beautiful. For some people color and style selection comes easy for others it can be overwhelming.
First, what not to wear:
Hiring a family photographer in the US Virgin Islands during for your family vacation does not mean you should dress your family in the cliché ‘resort-style’ (all white shirt and khakis). Nothing is more embarrassing for your children (I promise). And let’s be honest, it is awkward to be dressed exactly alike with a handful of people unless you are on a sports team, in uniform, or part of a wedding bridal party. A lifestyle session is about capturing your family’s happiness, the silliness, and in between moments of simply being together on vacation. You don’t have to dress like a team to show that you are together. The hugs, kisses, laughter and splashing on the beach shows your togetherness. Giving your family the opportunity to express their personal style means they will feel more comfortable and will allow their personalities to shine.
3 Easy Steps That Take The Stress Out Of Coordinating The Family:
Step 1. Get inspired.
Not every person is an artist or stylist with a knowledge of color theory – you’ll need to find color combination inspiration. You can find this in food, architecture and in nature. The Virgin Islands is the one place in the world where you can absolutely rock the vibrant color, sample colors found locally in the cactus, bougainvillea, mango, bananas and the aqua blue Caribbean sea that surrounds our islands. I have a Pinterest board dedicated to color inspiration where you can begin!
Step 2. Color Theory.
Once you have chosen an inspiration reference send it to the other family members that will be a part of the session. It is important to note that it is NOT essential for everyone to match the colors perfectly, as long as the shades are within the same color family it will coordinate beautifully.
Step 3. Find Balance With Neutrals.
Whites, grays, browns are your friend, they break up and neutralize pops of color. Imagine the white wall in the inspiration photo above being yellow instead of white, the pink blanket and bright yellow pillows all would become a little TOO MUCH in the space, the white wall acts as a neutralizer.
